Chapter One
“Okay, girlfriends, pull up your seats. It’s hunting time and I need a hefty injection of ego-boost. This place is a male Mecca, compliments of the yacht marina out there.”
Katherine Toomy—Kat to her friends—selected a table close to the railing that enclosed the outdoor dining area of the Seaview Café and took a deep, cleansing breath. She loved this place. Loved being able to look out over Darling Harbour at night. The city lights glinting on the inky water…the moored yachts in the harbour…the bustle of the tourists along the waterfront. It all combined to give the area an exciting ambience.
“Hey, this is great. I love eating alfresco.” Kat’s friend, Marly Devon, grabbed a chair and positioned herself so she could check out the water. “I can’t believe I’ve lived in Darling Harbour for two years and have never been to this place.”
Kat grinned at her flatmate, Julia. “Want to tell her why we really come down here?”
Julia chuckled. “Sit here long enough and you’ll get to check out all the yachties. Some of these guys are hawt.”
“Um, this isn’t where you met Jason, is it?”
Before Kat could respond to Marly’s question, an irate male voice interrupted the girls’ conversation. “Will you please step aside? You’re blocking my aim…er, view.”
Kat did a slow turn to find the owner of the voice. The guy at the small table next to them peered at her over the top of dark-rimmed glasses as if she’d committed some unpardonable sin. An open laptop and a digital camera sat in front of him, papers and folders littering the tabletop. He was obviously having a working dinner.
“Look, I’m sorry, I’ll—”
“Hurry up and sit down. I’m losing my subject.” He used the arms of the chair to raise himself half out of the seat and stare over her shoulder.
“Bite me,” she muttered. What a dipshit, and a rude one at that. Although, for a nerdy prick, he wasn’t too bad. From what she could see, he had the type of body that attracted her. Lean and hungry. And given the length of those long, jean-encased legs, he looked to be quite tall. Dark hair fell forward in a curl over his forehead. She stared past the glasses on the end of his nose to his eyes, the colour of a storm-tossed sea. Steel grey and glinting. Altogether, a nice package. It was a shame about the attitude.
With a flounce, she turned back to her friends and yanked the spare chair away from the table. Out of sheer perversity, she took her time hanging her bag on the back of the chair. Then she lowered her butt into place.
“Ouch!” Kat jumped up, hand clutching her ass. “Something bit me.”
Julia pushed her chair back and rushed around to Kat’s side. “How could something bite you?” She pushed Kat’s hands away, trying to inspect her friend’s butt for any damage.
The same male voice interjected, this time laced with concern. “Miss, are you okay?”
Kat glared at him. He’d pushed his chair back and had risen to his full height. She was right. He had to be at least six feet tall, if not more. But right now, she didn’t give a damn. Her ass hurt.
He moved in close and stared down at the chair. “Look, there’s a squashed bee on your seat.” He picked it up and held it out to her. “You’ve been stung.”
“Huh? A bee?” Without thinking, she held her out hand so he could place the dead insect in it. His fingertips brushed her palm and Kat gave an involuntary shiver. She glanced up at him, at the stormy grey of his eyes, the small smile curving his lips. Bedroom eyes, she decided. The sort that made a girl melt in the right circumstances. When he wasn’t frowning at her, he was a definite turn-on.
“Are you sure you’re okay? I…ah, I could check the damage out for you if you want.” He dropped his hand and rested it on her rear end. Then, as if concerned for her well-being, he gently caressed the curve of one cheek. “I’m really good at…biting, I’m told.” His grin widened. “You did tell me to bite you, didn’t you? I hear tell the teeth are the perfect instrument for removing bee stingers. Of course, then I’d have to kiss it better.”
“Hoy, hands off the merchandise.” Heat swamped her, rushing through her body like a tidal wave marching inexorably towards the shore. Her cheeks felt as if they were on fire and her nipples peaked under the light fabric of her halter-top. And given the way his gaze immediately dropped to her chest, she had no doubt her nerdy professor had noticed, too.
She stepped away from him, although she had an insane desire to lean into his touch. A slight chuckle lightened the tension that tightened the muscles in her gut. “Thanks but I think I can manage.”
He arched an eyebrow. “Not even a massage?”
‘Sorry, not your lucky day, I’m afraid.” She turned back to her friends
Julia covered her mouth with her hands, but Kat saw the crinkles at the corners of her eyes. Her own mouth twitched. “Don’t you dare laugh, Julia Crain. I can’t believe this day could get any worse. First, I find Jason, my so-called boyfriend, and his best buddy cavorting on my bed in my underwear. Then I get snarled at by some nerdy professor. Now a bee bites me on the ass and, damn it, I think the damn stinger’s still in there.”
Julia and Marly burst out laughing. Kat joined in. It was pretty funny. The last thing she’d expected to happen to her. “Okay, enough already,” she spluttered. “I need to go check if the stinger is still in there because it hurts like a bitch. Back in a minute. Oh, and order me the lobster, will you?”
Kate disappeared into the ladies’ restroom and grabbed the first unoccupied stall. Slipping her cargo pants and panties down, she ran her hand over her left butt cheek until she felt it. Something sticking out of the fleshy curve. Grabbing the end of it, she pulled,
wincing as it parted company with her sore ass.
Her eyes opened wide at what she held in her hand. Well, hell! With a bemused shake of her head, she grabbed a piece of toilet paper and stuck it on her butt where a crimson bead of blood oozed from the bite mark. Then she yanked her underwear and trousers up and headed back to her friends. Checking the seat first, she sat and pulled herself close to the table.
“You are not going to believe this. I’ve been stung by Cupid.” She sat back and waited for Marly and Julia’s reactions, not expecting the choking sounds coming from the man at the next table. She cast a quick glance over her shoulder to find him staring at her with a worried look on his face. Weird!
“What on earth are you talking about?” Marly shook her head. “I’m sorry, sweetie, but I think stress is getting to you.” She toyed with the plastic decorations in the centre of their table.
Kat grinned. “Oh? Then how do you explain this?” She held up the miniature gold arrow she’d extracted from her ass.
Julia took one look and burst out laughing. “It must have been on the seat. I’ve read about impaling yourself on a turgid member, but this takes the cake. How about that? Pricked in the butt by Love. ”
The man next to them spluttered again. Kat frowned. Just what was going on with him? Hell, she didn’t need to be a rocket scientist to work it out. He was probably sitting over there laughing his butt off at her. Normally, that would have pissed her off, but despite the fact he’d played the jerk earlier on, he was kind of cute. Maybe she should ask him to join them. It would give her a chance to get to know him.
Before Kat could do more than flick him a quick grin, Julia reached across the table and snatched the little arrow away from her.
“Hey, this is metal.” Julia held it up to the light and twisted it around in her hand. “I could be wrong, but this looks like real gold. It’s definitely not a toy.”
Kat snagged it out of Julia’s hand and tucked it away in her handbag. “All the more reason to keep it. I don’t really believe in Cupid, but it’s probably the closest I’ll get to finding love now that Jason, the turd, has decamped.”
A draught of cool air suddenly wafted across the table. Goosebumps rose on her arms and Kat shivered. She turned her head quickly from side to side. If she wouldn’t have thought she was going crazy, she would have sworn she’d seen something—a shadow, highlighted with a glint of gold—from the corner of her eye. How strange.
“Ahh, we might be able to do something there.” Marly flicked her fingers to gain Kat’s attention.
Kat forgot the eerie sensation and concentrated on her friends. “Do something about what?”
Julia cast a secretive grin towards Marly. “We’ve decided to give you a gift.”
“Aww, that’s really sweet of you, but it’s not necessary. Just ignore my whining. My heart’s not broken.” She chuckled. “My ego’s a bit bent out of shape is all, and I’m as frustrated as hell after three months of mediocre sex, but otherwise I’m good.”
This time their neighbour sniggered. Kat frowned in his direction, but in the face of his sexy smile, couldn’t keep it up.
“My offer to…bite you…still stands,” he quipped.
Kat just grinned and shook her head. Hey, this guy could be a lot of fun when he forgets to play the grump.
Marly leaned across the table, her chubby face alight with mischief. “If you could take one weekend away and do whatever you wanted, what would it be?”
Kat gurgled with laughter. “Oh, that’s easy. Meet some hot sexy stud…” For a moment, her mind focused on the man at the neighbouring table. “…and get screwed six ways from Sunday for two whole days.” Not caring that the man next to them could no doubt hear every word, she continued. “I’m so horny you wouldn’t believe it. Hmm, maybe I’ll go in for a little BDSM while I’m at it.”
She snorted at Julia’s look of surprise. “No, I’m not into pain, but just imagine how much of a turn-on it would be if a man came to you masked and forced you to submit to him. And you wanted to because you were so wet you couldn’t think about anything else but him impaling you on his turgid member.”
As she studied the looks on her friends’ faces, laughter caught her up again and she rolled back in her chair. In lots of ways, Marly had always been pretty straight-laced and it cracked up Kat to see her reaction.
“You’d do that?” Marly’s eyes were so wide, the white of her eyeballs almost swallowed the blue of her iris.
“In a heartbeat,” Kat responded. Then Marly surprised her. She turned to Julia with her usual cheeky grin and gave a thumbs-up signal.
“You got all that, Julia?” She snapped a smart salute at Kat. “Cupid’s apprentices Marly and Julia are about to grant your wish. We’re sending you to L’Amour for the weekend. You’ll be back in time for work on Monday.”
“Huh? L’Amour? The fantasy love island with the fancy resort off the coast of Queensland? You’re kidding me.”
“Nope,” Julia cut in. “Two days of debauchery coming up. We feed your data into their computer and they match you up with your perfect partner for the weekend. Just think! Two days of sand, surf and sex on a tropical island. You up for it, Katherine Toomy?”
“Yeah, baby, bring it on. I’m getting hot just thinking of it.”
Julia leaned closer and dropped her voice to a whisper. “You’re not the only one getting hot. Check out the look on the face of the guy behind you. He’s just about salivating.”
Kat moved her chair around a little more so she could eyeball the man at the table next to them without craning her neck. His glasses rode the tip of his nose. His eyebrows almost disappeared into his hairline. A dark flush tinted his cheeks.
For a moment, she felt a twinge of embarrassment at her sexual fantasies. Then she shrugged it away and tipped him a wink. “Hey, you into bondage? Shame about the glasses though. I don’t think they’ll fit under a mask.”
Chapter Two
Gabe slammed shut his jaw and gulped. Hand shaking, he pushed his glasses back up his nose. Sexual energy zapped through his body like bolts of lightning. His blood heated up, driving south to harden his cock. Jesus, get your head out of your pants, Gabriel Carpenter. Much more and your tongue will be hanging out and you’ll be panting like a dog.
He shook his head. He couldn’t believe he’d been so turned on by the woman’s sexual fantasy that he’d almost fallen out of his seat trying to make certain he didn’t miss a word. He’d never been into bondage. Truth be told, he didn’t know a lot about it, but he sure wouldn’t mind learning the ropes with her.
Something about her fed every fantasy he’d ever had. Tilting his head so his glasses slid down again, he stared at her over the top of them. A pouty mouth, honey blonde hair cut in a perky bob, laughter that made his cock sit up and twitch…oh man, this was bad.
She was tall for a woman, a perfect match for him. All the right bits would fit together nicely if he ever got to kiss her. Yeah, right! And all those bits were perfectly proportioned from what he could see. Her generously curved breasts would make a satisfying handful. Hmm, wonder if she knows the outline of her nipples shows under the clingy material of that halter-top.
He had an inexplicable desire to go down on his knees beside her, place his mouth over the tell-tale marks on her top, draw her nipples into his mouth and suckle like a babe. Hell, who was he kidding? Feed like a baby? No freakin’ way. This was all to do with raging lust and rampaging testosterone. Christ, he’d never had it so bad.
He craned his head to get a glimpse of her face, grimacing as a painful twinge buried itself in his neck. Sliding his hand under the hair at the back of his head, he fingered the dark mole he’d had since birth. It felt swollen. Maybe it was time he got off his butt and had the wretched thing removed. Later. Right now, he was more interested in the woman at the table next door. And the effect she had on his libido.
A flash out of the corner of his eye caught his attention. He flicked a quick glance at the orname
ntal shrub in the terracotta pot pushed up against the railing behind him. For a moment there, he could have sworn he’d seen a diaper-clad Cupid, complete with gold wings fastened to his back, holding a tiny golden bow and arrow. He shook his head. Man, working for Cupid was getting to him. All he could think of was the woman at the table beside his and how he’d like to strip her naked and bury his aching cock deep inside her.
With a groan, Gabe mentally smacked himself upside the head. He had to stop this…before he found himself confined to his seat on the edge of the restaurant for hours, waiting for his boner to go down. If he stood up now, he’d totally disgrace himself or beg the woman to let him tie her up and have his way with her.
With a determined effort, he dragged his mind from his body and tried to think about work. Oh, he was in so much shit. With a snort of disgust, he threw the pen he held onto the table. It looked like an epi-pen, one of those ones designed to fire a shot of adrenaline to counteract anaphylactic shock. Except this one was designed to deliver a different type of projectile. Gabe sighed. When his client decided to jump in on the latest technology wave, he tended to do it with both feet.
Dragging his laptop closer, Gabe opened up one of the files and entered the woman’s name. Katherine Toomy her friends had called her. A groan surfaced as he read the data. That’d be right. Not a match in sight. With another heartfelt sigh, he grabbed his cell phone and put in a call to his client.
“Hey, CB, how’s your mental breakdown going?” he whispered into the phone, keeping his eye on the table next door.
“Is that you, Gabe? Yeah, of course it is. Who else calls me Cupid Baby?”
“At least I shortened it to CB,” Gabe replied. “Run around in a stupid baby diaper and what can you expect?”
